I found string beans today and it was glorious.

I haven't made a post about a fluffy subject in a while:

This was a major milestone for me, living here on the island.  I probably wasn't just looking hard enough, but the thing about Dominica is that you never really know what some of the stores are going to be selling.  Even the "grocery stores" are just little mom-and-pop places here or there.  You want to know make at home and (sometimes) cook for myself?  I know some people who are planning on coming to Ross are curious about this stuff.  My entire menu goes something like this:

  • Fried Chicken
  • Hamburgers
  • Dehydrated Mashed Potatoes
  • Spaghetti
  • Corn
  • French Toast
  • Eggs, Omlets, Sausages, and Other Morning Food
  • Tuna Sandwiches
  • Egg Salad Sandwiches
  • Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches
  • Cold Cuts and Cheese Sandwiches
  • (Lots of Sandwiches)

And that's about it.  Other than that, it's just canned food, snacks, and stuff mostly in and around campus.  This usually includes getting Subway 3-4 times a week.  (Yes, more sandwiches.)  I do eat a lot of fruit.  If you like fresh fruit, you're never going to be in short supply here on the island.  Since I've gotten here I've acquired a taste for passion fruit and mango.  I also used to eat a lot of grapefruit.

I obviously don't really know how to cook and for the people that do, they are a lot better off than I am.  On the other hand, there are some people who eat nothing but Subway and pizza all day, everyday. (Note: Subway also falls under the category of, "You never know what they're going to have."  Whatever ingredients they have on any given day is always a mystery... it's like solving a crime novel every time.)

But these green beans are amazing to me, it's like Christmas.

If you want more vegetables there's a farmer's market every Saturday, back in town (Portsmouth), but I've never made the trip out there for that.

So if you can't live on this stuff for 4 months straight and if you can't cook... you better make preparations to ship all of your food down with you in shipping barrels -- which is what many other students do, if they don't feel like solving crime novels every other day.

Jonathan,

I just wanted to thank you for all your blogging. I found your previous blog of your senior year of college and you have been extremely helpful so far. I graduated with a degree in Business Admin, but have applied to a few Post-Bacc pre-medical programs. I'm struggling to figure out my finances, with more loans, but your blogging has been encouraging. Keep it up!

Nate
